Jumbo Kingdom Sampan Ride around Aberdeen Fishing Village - Hong Kong
Filed Under (China, Hong Kong, Travelling, World Souvenirs) by Janet on 04-06-2008
We’ve now arrived at the Jumbo Kingdom of Hong Kong, where we’d be embarking on a Sampan Ride around the Aberdeen Fishing Village - how cool how cool both Dear & I were really excited :
Aberdeen is the largest satellite town with a population of 60000. It used to be a Pirates’ Den 2 centuries ago, & later became a simple Fishing Village in Hong Kong.
Modernizing with many local high-rise buildings developments that spread out to the nearby hillsides, Aberdeen has now become a vibrant Waterfront Resort for people from Metropolitan Hong Kong.
Despite its modernization, Aberdeen today still holds its traditional fishing life where thousands of boat people live in floating homes of old-fashioned Boats, Junks & Sampans.
Sampan means a relatively flat bottomed Chinese wooden boat, & here below are our Sampan Ride Tickets - Nick our Hong Kong tour guide told us that this was to be our last chance of taking the Sampan Ride cos it would no longer be available to tourists as it would be shut down very soon in this very year!
These 2 Tickets have thus become our most precious travelling Souvenir Tickets :
We’re now at the Jumbo Kingdom Pier walking towards the Sampan :
While seated on the Sampan Boat, I snapped some photos of the lovely serene surrounding :
Below’s a similar Sampan like the one on which we were seated - setting off from the Pier :
Our Sampan lady driver :
The roof of our Sampan decorated with colorful wooden planks :
Charming Dear seated inside our Sampan :
Here’s the front view of the Sampan on which we were seated :
And below are photos of Dear & myself on the Sampan Ride - it was really cooling & fun & we were both enjoying it so much looking at the surrounding sceneries.
We also started chatting with our Puerto Rico & Swedish tour mates about Hong Kong & I was introducing them the famous Jumbo Restaurant & the surrounding boat people etc - as Dear always say I can be a travelling tour guide haha!!!
More self-taken portraits of Dear & myself on our most wonderful Ride :
Photos of the surrounding Junks & Boats against the many high-rise buildings of Hong Kong :
And here’s a photo of the splashing rushing water by our Sampan as we rode on the huge seas of beautiful Hong Kong :
More lovely sights from our Sampan Ride :
Another snapshot of smiling Dearie :
And I continued to capture the fasinating boat life of the Hong Kong boat people with my camera :
After about half an hour, our Sampan Ride was about to come to an end & our Sampan lady driver started collecting our fare - at a HK$55 (which is about $11 Singapore dollars) from each tourist - the money to be put in her following plastic container which she hid under the round Rattan Cover :
And we’re now approaching the Jumbo Restaurant of Hong Kong :

The very popular Jumbo Restaurant :
We’re now returning to the Jumbo Kingdom Pier :

I’ve put in the following a Slideshow of all my other photos taken from our Jumbo Kingdom Sampan Ride around the Aberdeen Fishing Village :
Here’s Dear standing infront of the Jumbo Kingdom Pier - it was our 1st Sampan Ride in Hong Kong & we both had such a great time!!
It was immediately back to our tour Coach to continue on the rest of our tour in Hong Kong :
