Arrived at the Beach Car Park at Birubi Point at James Patterson Street at Anna Bay after half hour drive from Nelson Bay…………………
Such a lovely place out here – Anna Bay is a quiet Country Town – Gateway to Stockton Beach (or Stockton Bight) Sand Dunes & departure Point for 4WD Adventure Tours of the extensive Sand Dunes – the largest moving Costal Sand Mass in the Southern Hemisphere!
Below shows Dear standing at Birubi Point SLSC (Surf Life Saving Club) – a popoular sport for Surfers on Stockton Beach, on the Tasman Sea - located North of the Hunter River in New South Wales &………………..
In World War II (WWII), Stockton Beach was fortified against a possible attack by Imperial Japanese forces – serving as a bombing & gunnery range as well as a dumping area for unused bombs by aircraft returning from training sorties.
Driving on the Stockton Dunes we arrive at the Top of the World……………………….
Most of the Sand was deposited here at Stockton Bight about 6000 years ago – these Yellow Grains have been washed in from the Sea & blown ashore by wind to form Sand Dunes up to 40 metres high with Slopes up to 60 degrees!
Sea Grass, Weeds & Algae Covered Dunes along Stockton Beach looking like an Alien Planet…………………..
And these Shell Middens are up to 12000 years old!! Now arriving at another Historic Site :
Haa Dear & I have innitially wanted to take up the Quad Bike Tour of Stockton Beach & Dunes – but luckily we didnt’t cos it was so much more relaxed on a 4 WD tour
We’re now visiting Tin City – a small makeshift Fishing Village that emerges from the Dunes like a Mirage, where Solar & Generator driven Power provide TV & Ceiling Fans, & a Beer Keg placed on the Roof for Tank Storage of fresh groundwater for showering……………………….
